There are several ways to install xp via pendrive. This method is helpful under sitiuation when dvd drive is not working...As a user I also tried in many ways and atlast got a good method to install xp via pendrive.
THE METHOD IS:
step1 : first goto this site and download this application(winsetupfromusb).
step3 : now select the disk type as removable.
1. use hpformat tool to format the usb drive.
step4 : In hp format tool first select the usb device then select format option as NTFS for speed copy
of windows files.click start.
After formatting it will return to original window..
now select the windows xp source..
click GO.
step5 : after completing the process,restart your computer.now goto bios by pressing f8 or del key.
select the boot device as USB HARDDISK or FLASH DRIVE.... now save it and restart.
That's it your computer will detect the usb drive and will start the setup..

can i use my pendrive as storage device back again after doing this
ya u can... just format it again with FAT(for 2gb) or FAT32(for more than 2gb).Its very easy process to setup xp via pendrive.
